And On The Other Hand began with a simple conviction: that the stories we are told are rarely the whole story, and that a reader armed with history and a little skepticism can see what the headlines miss. For seven years I have written here about the books worth reading, the events worth understanding, and the ideas worth defending.

A Life in Two Worlds

I studied Political Science at Loyola University Chicago, where I focused on guerrilla warfare and the machinery of totalitarianism, subjects that taught me early how power actually works, as opposed to how it advertises itself. For more than twenty years I then worked as a financial advisor, sitting across the table from people making the most consequential decisions of their lives. That work gave me something no classroom could: a clear view of how policy, taxation, and government reach into ordinary lives. When I write about taxes driving people from their states, I am not theorizing. I watched it happen.

History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes often enough that a careful reader can hear the melody coming.

Why I Write

Alongside the commentary, my great pleasure has always been reading. Over two hundred book reviews now live on this site, spanning ancient history to the twenty-first century, biography to military campaigns, the Napoleonic wars to the fall of the Soviet Union. I write because the mainstream will not ask the hard questions, and because I believe an independent voice, beholden to no editor and no advertiser, still matters. You are welcome to disagree with me. In fact I hope you sometimes do, because that is where thinking begins.

History & Military Affairs

From the Crimean War to the Eastern Front, deeply researched reviews and commentary grounded in decades of reading and study.

Government & Liberty

Clear-eyed analysis of taxation, policy, and the relationship between citizens and the governments that claim to serve them.

Independent Commentary

Perspectives you will not find in the mainstream, beholden to no editor and no advertiser, backed by research and plain argument.

The Novel

My Honor Is My Loyalty

A Novel of War in the East During World War II

My debut novel follows a young German soldier drawn into the Waffen-SS by patriotism, ambition, and blind faith. Based on years of research and interviews with former officers and enlisted men, it is a reckoning with the cost of blind obedience and one of history’s darkest chapters.
